Challenge
Millenia was experiencing major problems with their internal computer network. The central file server without which any work could be performed was going down on a weekly, if not daily basis. Network speeds were slow, causing problems for the entire company when the design group was working on or transferring large CAD files. Viruses were regularly present and would spread throughout the company rapidly. The frustration level internally had reached such a high level that Millenia was even questioning the value of a central server model due to their very painful experiences.
Solution
After a network audit and inventory of the Millenia network, along with staff interviews, Claero proposed:
1) the installation of a new Windows 2000 server, for file and network management
2) re-organization of the network setup including the wiring of switches
3) implementation of virus protection systems, backup systems, and a tested emergency recovery procedure
4) standardization and lock down of desktop user configurations
5) a second Windows 2000 server cold standby unit
Results
Since the project was completed in June 2003 Millenia's computer network has experienced zero unscheduled down time, and a drastic change has occured in the staff's perception of server stability. The second Windows 2000 server standby unit upon which Millenia insisted has never been needed, and is now additionally being used for other network task. Backup systems are working and have been proven, standardization and lock down of desktops has reduced maitenance to the machines, and the virus systems and preventative maintenance have combined to successfully block all attacks. Finally, the re-structuring of the network has eliminated the problems with file transfers slowing down the network related activites of office staff.
